I chummed around with Walter a bit in junior high, he always seemed to be a troubled soul. A lot of us grew up in pretty rough homes, his was really rough. Later on he hung with a crowd that was always in trouble and died tragically during a break in at a local business. It was a sad ending of a troubled young life. Rest in Peace.
Walter was a quiet, shy student at South Nelson Elementary. That's about my memory of him. His older sister Neva worked at the Civic Theatre all through high school, selling tickets in that little ticket booth. His older brother Nick was very troubled. Their father, also named Nick, was a hard-working carpenter who did excellent work, including a lot of work for my parents at our home. I remember my mother mentioning that the family had many sad difficulties. When Walter was shot during that break-in, his father came in tears to my parents, asking them to tell the police that his son had been a "good boy", and my father did speak up, to help Walter's father deal with the catastrophes that continued to befall his family. He wanted to have done better for his children but sometimes life is so difficult and such sad things happen.
