There's something to be said about a young man who loves to garden. Patrick Thast was an early riser and spent those quiet mornings outside grooming his neat rows of vegetables in the Thast household's garden. A special peace was earned in those early morning hours.
I was asked by Gordon Schmidt to relieve him on his paper route for a couple of weeks while the Schmidt family took a vacation. One of Schmidt's customers was the Thast household. Each morning Patrick was working quietly in the yard as sunlight touched his shiny black while warming my respect for Patrick who had recently cracked me across the back of my head sending me unconscious and being carried off the ice with a misconduct penalty at a midget hockey game earlier that Spring. I had charged Patrick into the boards and he responded with swinging his stick. By the end of my two weeks delivering the Thast's Daily News, Patrick and I were friends. I respect him for that and know he found something special in the ordered garden he managed for his family that summer.
Enjoy Paradise and that Everlasting Sunrise, Patrick!
I remember Pat from my days in Central School, when he went to St Joeseph's.
One fall myself and someone else, who shall remain nameless, somehow teamed up with Pat and someone else from St Joe's and threw some rotten apples at the young ladies from the Junior High School, on their way home.
Well long storey short, we got the strap for our participation, and he got off scott free!!
