Richard Darcy and I used to car-pool to NBHS. He served as an infantry radio operator, US ARMY (1st Division - "the Big Red One") in Vietnam. He was a highly decorated Combat Soldier. He achieved the rank of Sergeant, E-5. Richard was an Eagle Boy Scout, an outstanding young man. He taught me how to rebuild cars.

He married his NBHS sweetheart (NBHS Class of 1966) Shirley Gouveia, they raised one son and one daughter. A good friend to all who knew him. Sadly, Richard died on August 10th, 2004, Rochester, MA. He was 57 years old.

I knew Darcy from my church. For some reason we always called him by his last name. I also knew his wife Shirley. She lived right next door to me and we grew up together. Once when we were about 14 years old we all went on a church youth group excursion to New Hampshire. We were to climb Mt. Monadnock. Even then Shirley and Darcy were "boyfriend and girlfriend" About half way up things got tough and some of the kids including Shirley wanted to go back down. I am pretty sure Darcy wanted to get to the top but without a blink he went back down with his sweetheart. Although there were other kids to walk with her he wouldn't thing of letting her go without him. He was just that kind of a person.

Richard,  It has been 10 years since you left us.  You always were a very good friend.  I hope your family has been well.  Wow, it has been a decade.  Time flys right on by.  See you on the "other side" old friend.  RIP
