Actually, it WAS the sumer of '69!  We all piled into Salty's car (or a reasonable facimillie of a car). We were headed up I-95 North and cars were passing us and they were all waving.

We were just cruising - we had all day to get where we were going.

Someone noticed that some of the people were pointing, too. They were pointing at our tires.

We stopped and foung the left, rear tire was almost off the car. Actually, the lugs had loosened and the tire had wobbled, in and out, and the threads on the lugs were about filed off. We could only tighten some of them back a little way so we wobbled to the nearest gas station.  We pooled our money and bought a new set of lugs and I theink the mechanic put them on for free.

Now, we were back on the road again and we tooled on up the road and finally made it to Hampton Beach, NH.  We pulled into a parking lot near the beach and bright lights lit up the sky (and the interior of the car). WOW, the Hampton Beach police had heard we were coming and they came to meet us!  The officer informs Salty that his car has bald tires and they have stopped us for a search. The trunk was opened and thoroughly searched after which we got a lecture on the dangers of alcohol and they let us go with a warning. Alcohol? We don't need no stinking ALCOHOL!

Long story short - we went to a great Three Dog Night concert, slept on the beach, ran along the shore at 2 in the a.m. and watched the phosphoresence spray out from under our feet - beautiful! AND we only had one more run in with the local authorities when they came round to wake us up at 7:00 in the morning and vacate the beach.

God said to Saint Peter, "Just keep him talking. I have to figure out what do do with him!" To which St. Peter answered "Keep him talking? I can't get him to stop!"  Needless to say, "rest in peace" is not one of the things that comes to mind to say to Salty. I know that little ball of energy is talking up a storm and making new friends whereever he goes. Night, night buddy. Thanks for the memories!

Alan, I'm so happy you posted this.  Great memory.  I went to Our Lady of Mt Carmel School with Salty from kindergarten until 8th grade and, of course, then to NBHS.  Salty was the first boy I ever saw with blond hair (!) and in 1st grade I fell in love with him. He sat in the back of the class and one day I made an excuse to sharpen my pencil so I'd walk behind him.  His hair was always cut really close but it shined blonde.  As I walked by him I reached over and pulled a little bit of his hair.  To my shock, he started crying and told the nun what I had done. I was mortified!  That was oddly the beginning of a great friendship.  We were both funny in school, often bouncing humor off one another.  We lost touch in the enormity of NBHS but I never forgot him. RIP, Salty.

This saddens me Al and Rita.  I go way back with Salty, Bonney St. where he lived, South End Little League and of course, NBHS.  Like you described him Al in so many words, a bundle of energy, a fireball.  He was like by both the males and females.  He had a huge heart and that's what I will remeber him for other than his talents on the soccer field.  I los tract of Salty but would think about him often, wondering where he was and how he was doing.  I don't know the circumstances surrounding his passing, but I just hope he's at peace now.

Al, I think we all have a similar Hampton Beach story, there for a concert (in my case a Chicago concert), sleeping on the beach and confrontation with the law.  It all turned out okay though.

RIP Salty, your life mattered.

Steve

I am so sad to hear about Salty's Death from his sister Linda. we all grew up together in the South End my siblings & his siblings. All of us use  use to walk over down along the Cove to Lums where his Mom  Gloria worked as a waitress and she use to give us french fries  & cokes and we would bum cigarettes from her & Salty would be in there with Michelle.. He was a great soccer player like his Dad.  Ahhh such great memories from our School Days. He will be missed. God Bless him & his family.

Alan was right about salty in that he had a magnetic personality and made friends every where he went.I would go to the south end see him there and we would just hang out. After high school I lost touch with him but every once in a while ,I would go through the yearbook ,the people I know and see what happened to them like salty.

My friend ,may God be with you and rest in peace

As, everyone has posted, Salty had a Great Personality.  We had Portuguese with Mr. Medeiros and set several times in the cafeteria.  After high school, I used to see him play soccer for Portuguese Sports and Faialense.  Watch Out, get out of the way, or Salty will run you over.

Keep him alive by talking about him, and wherever he is, he is talk up a storm.
