David Bettridge

Dave was the first kid I met in New Canaan.  He popped up in our woods on Woodridge Circle and asked me if I smoked (I was 12).  Within the hour I had smoked my first cigar in "The Mount Vernon", the new house under construction next door (the house later became Carole Schiaroli's house).  From that day through high school graduation he was the instigator of all minor infractions and most major fun on The Circle.  Until we could drive legally, The Circle Mob spent hours in his rec room playing 45s and making prank phone calls, lifting weights and planning to be all-stars or lady killers or perhaps movie stars.  He organized Kelly Field football and by high school it became a brand.  He was loud and raucous and had a million friends.

I ran into him at "The Hearth" and "Three Pines" a number of times after we graduated.  He was still the life of the party and as friendly as the day we met.  I miss him.

Maybe I shouldn't tell the story, but I'm sure Dave wouldn't mind. Among his other talents he had an amazingly resonant belch. I remember one day on Senior Row he snuck up behind Asel Gurney, the janitor, with a cheerleader's megaphone and belched in Azel's ear. Azel had to go home sick.

Dave was an original member of Samson & The Biblical Madrigals.  In fact he came up with the name for the quartet.
