In Memory

Steven George Schmitt

09/29/2011 - It is with the greatest sadness that I report the passing of Steve "Beany" Schmitt at 5 pm this evening. Beany passed away with his son at his side after a lengthy battle with cancer. There will be no calling or services as he elected to donated his body to scientific research. Just remember Beany for the contributions that he made to the Class of '67 and for the special friend that he was to many of us.

Sincerely,
Denny Adams

Steve and I went through St. Anne's elementary and CHS together. He was a gentle giant. We used to go to the roller rink at Knightstown looking for girls. On the way there or back we usually stopped off at the soda shoppe. I still remember him downing 6 milkshakes and a dozen big hamburgers, while I had 1 of each. I met him when he came back from playing basketball in the European league, and he said he had to come home because he couldn't make enough to keep himself fed. I always had boxing gloves around and Steve and I went a couple of rounds once. I was barely tapping him on the chin with my jab (I just couldn't reach him), while he beat on the top of my head. When I switched to his body, he just pounded harder. The peanut gallery thought it was the funniest fight they ever saw. I lost track of him while I was at college. I regret that. A great loss to all his family and friends..
