"How I got from there (Marie Frank) to here (Marie Maas)" - After graduating from New Ulm in 1963, I attended Wayne State College in Wayne, NE. for two years. Then my father accepted a call to Ixonia, WI and we moved there in May, 1965. I finished my college years at Stout State University, Menomonie, WI with a BS in Foods and Nutrition. I had planned to work in a test kitchen (like Betty Crocker or Pillsbury) after graduation. The Lord, however, had other plans for me... My father was on the Board at Lakeside Lutheran High School, Lake Mills, WI. Just at the time that I graduated, Lakeside was opening a Home Ec. department and needed a teacher. My father told them about me and they sent me a call to teach Home Ec and 11th grade English. I accepted the call although I was sure I would hate teaching (that's the reason I didn't go on to college at New Ulm). As it turned out, it was one of the best years of my life. I loved teaching!!! I was just there one year when I decided to get married to a man that I had met in NE in 1965 - two months before we moved to WI. In 1968 I married Rod Maas in Ixonia and we moved to Norfolk, NE. Because I didn't have a teaching certificate, I couldn't teach in NE. I took a job at the Norfolk Regional Center (a mental hospital) as a food service supervisor. In 1970 we had our first daughter and 2 years and 2 weeks later we had our second daughter. I worked at the Regional Center for 34 years and then retired. Later I became the food manager for the Norfolk Junior High School for 4 years and acutally retired in 2007.

We still live in Norfolk. Our older daughter is married with 2 girls and teaches at the college here in Norfolk. Our second daughter is divorced with three children. She is a RN and works at the Norfolk hospital. My husband retired from the Goodyear plant in Norfolk 2 years ago. This summer we will celebrate our 40th anniversary.

A note of interest: When I started my freshman year at New Ulm, I roomed with Susan Ellenberger Pohlman. Twenty-five years later her oldest daughter and our oldest daughter roomed together at NE Lutheran High School, Waco, NE. Sue and I are charter members of Shepherd of Peace Lutheran church, Norfolk, NE.

I am an avid bike rider (I have an old Schwinn - no speed - that takes me all over Norfolk). I am an exercise "nut" and belong to a 24 hour fitness center. I spend a lot of time with my 5 grandchildren and love being a grandmother.
