Donald Hugh Smith, 55, husband of Marti Brown Smith, passed away on Wednesday, August 16, 2017, surrounded by his family.Hugh was born on August 12, 1962, to Don and Laurita Smith. He was raised in Turbeville and attended Salem Academy where he made many life-long friends and played football, basketball and baseball. Hugh attended Winthrop College where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Degree in 1984 and returned to Turbeville to serve his community. Hugh was the owner and operator of Turbeville IGA for over 30 years. He served his community in many ways through his work. He was the first boss of many young people and proved to be a wonderful mentor to them. If you visited the IGA you probably saw Hugh walking faster than most people run, but he was never too busy to give you his big smile and share a kind word or to crack a joke. Hugh loved to laugh. He had a heart for people and he loved and was loved by many. Hugh's love for his community was also evidenced by the many committees and boards he served on over the years. He was President of the Carolina Food Industry Council, serving North and South Carolina from 2014 to 2015. Another love and talent of Hugh's was music and singing. All who heard Hugh sing were blessed. A founding member of the Puddin Swamp Singers, he entertained many with his gift. He shared this gift at many weddings but he mostly used his gift of song to bring glory to God. Hugh's faith in God was strong and he served his church, Pine Grove U.M.C., in many ways, from singing in the choir and serving on many committees to changing light bulbs and mowing grass. Hugh and Marti were married on August 9, 1997, and shared twenty wonderful years together. He was a loving husband who never failed to tell and show his wife how much he loved her daily. The two of them shared many adventures and lived a memory filled life together. They were blessed with three great kids, Braydon, Brennan and Blythe, and loved to share adventures with them as well. Hugh's children were always foremost in his mind. He helped them achieve whatever they set out to do. This included helping with acting roles, coaching baseball and softball, throwing pop-ups, practicing piano and growing their faith in God.Hugh's spirit is carried on by his wife and children of the home; his parents of Turbeville; two sisters, Landa Bleasdale of Manning and Lauranne Mays (David) of Lexington; his mother-in-law, Jeri Brown; brother-in-law, Jamie Brown (Mollie), both of Turbeville; two nephews; five nieces; beloved friends, Keith and Cheryl Wingard of Turbeville; and many other friends who have touched and enriched his life.He was preceded in death by his father-in-law, Randy Brown; paternal grandparents, Ernest and Evelyn Smith; and maternal grandparents, Harold Hugh Jordan and Annie Laurie Caulder.A funeral service will be held at 4 p.m. on Saturday, August 19, 2017, at Pine Grove United Methodist Church with the Revs. Tim Freeman, John Bauknight and Patrick Goodwin officiating.
