He was a faithful member of Sardinia Presbyterian Church (PCA), where he served as an elder for 45 years. He was a 1939 graduate of Clemson University, with a Bachelors of Science in Agronomy, and was a veteran of World War II. Following the war, he was awarded a Master of Science degree in Agricultural Education from Clemson University. He was a member of the 101st Airborne Division 506 Regiment, which landed on Normandy and participated in the Battle of the Bulge. He was a recipient of the Purple Heart, and was awarded the Belgium Fourrage, the Croix DeGuerre with Palm, the Dutch Orange Lanyard, the Victory Medal, the Presidential Citation with Star, and three Battle Stars. Captain McFaddin was the first company commander for Company E 118th Infantry South Carolina Army National Guard-Manning during which they stored weapons in the basement of the Clarendon County Courthouse and performed drills on the lawn. He was also a member of Black River American Legion Post #149. He taught agriculture in the East Clarendon School system from 1952 to 1973. He was a charter board member of Salem School, Inc., where he taught math and science for three years. Following retirement from teaching, he served as the Civil Defense and Veteran Affairs Officer of Clarendon County for five years. He served on the Clarendon Memorial Hospital Board, and was a member of the Clarendon County Historical Society. He was a renowned genealogist and historian who devoted many hours of service to the citizens of Clarendon County. He was often times contacted by families across the nation to aid them in research of their family history. He also served as the Clarendon County Soil and Water Conservation District Commissioner. He was an avid conservationist and horticulturist. He was recognized throughout the county as a master gardener, and propagator. He used these talents by beautifying the Sardinia community through sharing his gifts of nature with his friends and loved ones. He grew up on his family farm in the Sardinia community, where his father instilled in him a love of farming. He passed on this admiration for agriculture throughout his family, who are still operating the now bicentennial farm. Even so, his greatest devotion was to his Lord and family. He was a strong, gentle man who will be remembered as a devoted husband, loving father, distinguished soldier, farmer, educator, public servant and historian.
