Jim Ellis was for me a truly joyous person. Always ready to laugh and to make others laugh. In his last email to me he congratulated me on my magical ability to make a glass of beer disappear. He and I went all the way back to elementary school. There I saw a different side of Jim. The readiness to laugh was always there, but there was a strict discipline as well. Jim and I spent many a recess shooting baskets at Conner school. Jim had one firm principle: never stop shooting after a miss. We couldn't return to the classroom without a bit of success shooting baskets. I'm sure we resorted to some easy layups to get to class on time. but the principle stood firm.
