Joe and I spent a lot of time together as we were growing up. We rode the school bus, went to 4H meetings, went to the Gray Friends Church, played softball after church in the Powell's front yard on the Gray Road. We went sledding on the Morse Reservoir spillway, rode horses with the girls in the neighborhood and cruised the drive inns in Noblesville in Joe Duvall's '53 Ford. I remember going to a late season football game at Crawfordsville on the fan bus. We always laughed as we passed the sign "Brown Rubber Company" in Crawfordsville. It was below zero that night and we thought we were going to freeze to death the first half. We were standing in line to get some hot chocolate and smoking some little cigars that were like brown cigarettes. I had just drawn in a big mouth full of smoke when Joe taught me how to inhale. It hurt so bad and I coughed till I cried. The tears froze on my glasses. Joe thought it was funny, but I thought that I was about to die for a minute or so. We spent the second half on the fan bus keeping warm.

Many times we watched "Playboy After Dark" from the Playboy Mansion in Chicago on television. It was on very late on Saturday nights. (Actually Sunday morning!) We saw Lenny Bruce, Louis Armstrong and of course the bunnies. We thought it was the coolest and talked about some day being able to buy a Playboy Key that cost $100.

Joe always wanted to go on a cruise. His wife didn't like planes or boats so they had never gone on one. Finally in 2007 Joe talked her into a cruise to Alaska. They were at sea and Joe was having a wonderful time. Anita said that Joe was in command of the group with his sense of humor and stories. Then suddenly he had a heart attack, said I love you and good bye to Anita and was gone. I do remember Joe liked to be the center of attention. He always had a story or a joke to tell.
