Lee, my son Justin's passing this past year brought me back to High School and the sadness that filled our school after you died. The very afternoon of Justin's accident my wife Susan and I learned about a gathering of his classmates at our Church. We felt compelled to speak to them and try in some way to help comfort them. My memory of your accident helped me understand what they were feeling. Without that understanding I don't know what I would have said to them. I talked about you and others that passed while we were in High School. Teenagers are so fragile. Many of them were questioning life and why tragedy happens. I acknowledged having similar feelings; but then as I imagined joining Justin in Heaven some day, I felt reassured of our destination. God has blessed you Lee and even today you continue to guide us through the tragedies of life.
Lee Velder was a good guy who died much too young. I always enjoyed visiting with Lee in the hallways. Lee was proud to be a member of the Norfolk High School Band and often at Husker football games I imagine Lee leading the 'Pride of All Nebraska' onto the field.
I was close to Lee in school. He was a great friend, and a lot of times I think of him.
Tragic accident that I think all students that knew him it really hurt, too bad we didn't have the counceling back then that's out there now when a student passes.
