
NORFOLK — Services for Larry L. Apland, 73, of Norfolk will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Northern Heights Baptist Church, Norfolk. Visitation will be Tuesday from 4 to 7 p.m. at Home for Funerals. Burial will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Rose Hill Cemetery, Clark, S.D.
He died Sunday, June 24, 2012, at Faith Regional Health Services.

Larry Lowell Apland, the son of Paul and Viola (Brown) Apland, was born on Oct. 7, 1938, and raised on the family farm near Oldham, S.D. He attended Drakola County school and graduated from De Smet High School. He then served with the South Dakota National Guard and Nebraska National Guard. He received his bachelor of science degree from Southern State Teachers College in Springfield, S.D., and his master’s degree in mathematics from the University of Nebraska.
Larry married Carolyn Hoffman on June 25, 1960, and to this union four children were born.
Larry taught for three years at Petersburg Public School and then for 34 years at the Norfolk Public Junior High School, from 1964 until retiring in 1998, where he also was the seventh grade head football coach. He tutored mathematics at Northeast Community College for three years. Larry also served as the president of the board for the Madison County Credit Union.
He received many awards for his dedication and excellence in teaching, which included Outstanding Young Educator, Dedication to Service Award, Nebraska Education Award for Outstanding Service, Norfolk Coaches Association. He served as the president of NCEA and was a past president for District III.
Larry was a member of Northern Heights Baptist Church, where he served as treasurer. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, camping, football, farming and spending his winters at South Padre Island, Texas.
Larry is survived by his wife Carolyn of 52 years of Norfolk; their children and spouses, Brenda (Dennis) Hoff of Pierce, Michael (Robi) Apland of Spearfish, S.D., Darin Apland of Lincoln; his mother, Viola Apland of De Smet; two brothers, Mark (Jenny) Apland of Enon, Ohio, and Dan (Roxxanne) Apland of Sioux Falls, S.D.; grandchildren Brett Hoff, Jordan Hoff, Danielle Hoff, Kendra Apland and Marissa Apland.
