Joseph "Joe" Sterr

August 04, 1949 - December 23, 2017

Joseph "Joe" Sterr was born August 4, 1949 in Oklahoma City, before Norman had a hospital, and when Berry road was the western edge of town. He lived and died as a resident of Norman and proclaimed it the "best place in the world to live, as long as you can travel." Joe was born to Marjorie Sett, a school teacher and homemaker, and Frederick "Fritz" Sterr, a butcher and grocer. He graduated Norman High School in 1968 and the University of Oklahoma in 1972, with a degree in business administration. He worked for his father at Sterr's Grocery starting at a very young age until he open the Spirit Shop Liquor Store at the corner of Main and Berry in 1976. The Spirit Shop is regularly voted the best liquor store in Norman and Joe was very proud of the business he started. The liquor store will be continued by his son. Joe was a traveler, diner, drinker, cat owner, and a friend. He rarely travelled to the same place twice and believed there was too much to see and enjoy in the world to keep going to the same place. Joe always had a silly joke to share. Although not always politically correct, he was caring, and loved enjoying time with people from all walks of life. He believed education was the most important investment and put many members of the community through school. He loved Sooner Football and served concessions at Owen Stadium as a child. Joe was also a supported or local social services. Joe is survived by his brother, Frederick Sterr, Son Mathew Sterr, Daughter Julia Sterr, a cat, Girl, and three grandchildren, of which he was most proud, Harper (11), Declan (8), and Mason (7). Above all else, Joe was an amazing father. He exemplified what it meant to put your children first. Joe died on December 23, 2017. He will truly be missed.
