AT THE ZOO
Take a look at the wild adventure in store for us.
REUNION LOCATION
THE ALL NEW ELMWOOD PARK ZOO
in their 95th ANNIVERSARY YEAR
Selecting our venue
It started in January. Numerous venues and halls were considered. But this one represents Norristown like none other. The Zoo is the talk of the town in Norristown today as it is not only an educational resource, it is a thriving success. As Simon and Garfunkel said... IT IS ALL HAPPENING AT THE ZOO. It has become a major draw to the area. It represents a vision of what's possible in an overdue Norristown revitalization.
Our Zoo...You've come a long way baby. The zoo has changed hands a few times, even privatized since its start in 1924. At one point, the zoo nearly went belly up were it not for the help of some local 'Norristown family' generous benefactors.
Familiar scenes of the old Duck Pond and the Monkey House
Just a fine and fancy ramble to the zoo. At first, giraffes were summer residents only, now they live here year round as do most of the animals. It's a completely new and different zoo today, it is so clean and modern and well cared for compared to the old days when it was free and mostly unsupported except for small grants from the borough. And the natural high tech habitat design and engineering in today's Zoo is so impressive. Today it is a recreation center for all. In addition to animal exhibits and petting barn, there is a very large playground, an outdoor musical sound lab, numerous rope cat walks and zip line rides in the 'Treetop Adventures' area and much more. You could spend the day there and many do.
The zoo collaborates with schools and many for miles around schedule visits and it's not uncommon to see 20 school buses bringing curious minds eager to learn. It is the second largest Zoo in the state, but it's still growing like crazy and always expanding. Caution, there's a lot to see. We suggest, you may want to build a few additional hours of zoo visitation into your schedule and even come back, if you are visiting from out of town. What a gas ! You must come and see at the Zoo. You won't be disappointed.
If you haven't visited the Zoo's website, do so https://www.elmwoodparkzoo.org
TRIVIA
Our 50th Class Reunion will be held exactly 948 feet from the very location we graduated 50 years earlier on 6-9-69.
Are you good at Trivia? Wait until you see what's planned, we have prizes.
Here's our reunion hall 'Canopy Gardens Hall'
It's located right on the Zoo grounds. We looked around at a few different venues. The Zoo stood out. It hosts many local events and organizations today such as the Norristown Chamber of Commerce, private weddings, bar mitzvahs, corporate gatherings and educational events. The Library is holding a Jazz Fest there in June. If you haven't visited the zoo in 5 years or more, you simply won't recognize it.

OTHER THINGS TO DO THAT WEEKEND
MUSEUM TOUR * (Best kept secret ever, most local people don't know about it)
There is a little known but very expansive museum of eclectic collected items called American Treasures Museum in Oaks, PA in the 422 Business Complex containing thousands and thousands of exceptually interesting things we all grew up with and recognize. They open at 10am on Thursday through Sunday. There is a public tour at 10:30a on Saturday (which might line up with the Happy Hour) and numerous tours on Sunday, the cost is $12.50 person (seniors) and it is a tram ride which takes about an hour and a half. There is so much there you won't be able to catch it all as there is too much at which to look. There is also the world's largest self playing piano organ and calliope collection included in the tour which you can walk through by yourself before or after the tour and a car room of cars of the past. Go to their website and buy/reserve your tickets in advance. You will never see anything like it in your lifetime!
Take a look, most impressive. http://americantreasuretour.com
VISIT THE NEWER BUSINESSES IN TOWN
FIVE SAINTS NORRISTOWN'S NEW MICRO DISTILLARY * Parking Lot
Five Saints Distilling opened in 2014 inside the retired Humane Firehouse at the corner of Green Street and Main St. They use local ingredients from the Norristown State Farm Park and others and their 'white whiskey' is a favorite of your's truly. There are 3 floors, whick look like a firehouse museum (they tried to keep as much in place as possible). First floor is the bar area and distillery, the second floor is planned for a resturant and the third floor is targeted to be a venue hall. It was reminiscent to see the original firemen's parade band uniforms there. There's a parking lot off of main next to the building, don't turn up Green, it's one way.
