Jim Shelton (Shelton)

Don and I grew up together.  I believe that our memories go back as far as the 4th grade beginning at Eastwoood Elementary School.  He lived right across the street from Eastwood. We did many things together, hiked, biked, shot BB guns and even did a Homer and Jethro skit in 5th grade where we won 1st prize within our class.  When winter came, we would ice skate at Charmere Lake where I almost drowned.  Yep, I got too close to the edge of a hole on a dare from some unknown kid that I had never seen before.   The ice was worn thin where the ducks had worked 5" to 6" thick ice to an inch thick and with one more step, I went down, new Christmas coat and all.  Don was at the other end of the lake a 100 yards away.....skating..... having fun, making figue 8's and twirls and was unaware that I had fallen in.   After several tries of breaking ice to get leverage to find more solid ice, I could feel the cold weakening my grip.  With a final mustarded effort, I elbowed my way to the surface and rolled out on the ice.  I must have only weighed 90 lbs at the time (13ys old), but being wet I felt that I had doubled my weight.  I remember bening weak from the struggle and I needed to move off my back as I was beginning to stick to the ice.   I was about 50 yards from the shore when I hollered at Don to say I was leaving for home.  He didn't seem to realize what had happened, but waved back with a smile.

I walked two blocks to Don's house, grabbed my bike and headed for home......4 blocks away.  I swear if I hadn't been pedaling, I would have frozen right there in place and until the spring thaw.  I remember coming into the basement gargage breaking the arms of my coat to get it off and then removing most of frozen wet clothes.

I climbed the stairs.....opened the door and whenin two steps I would have been in my room to be rescued with a towel and warm clothes, but that didn't happen.   As I opened the basement door cautiously, there was a shawdowy figue just on the other side......It was Mom.....and all hell broke loose.

Rest in Peace, my good friend.  You are surely missed.
