Girts died in 2010 as a result of a heart attack. From the Northview Alumni website: "Remembered by Ken Rose as a basketball and football player and for the 1958 Chevy Impala red convertible he drove. Coolest car on the lot".
Obituary: GIRTS ATRENS January 10, 1943 - March 12, 2010 On March 12, 2010, we lost a husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend, when Girts died from a heart attack while on vacation in his beloved Hawaii. During his whole life, Girts shared with so many of us his adventures in seeing the world - his passion for business and always using integrity, trust, determination and his incredible vision resulting in success for all - his unconditional love and support to family and friends and the charitable organizations - most especially the Hospital for Sick Children that was so dear to his heart since Girts believed children are our future. Girts will be sadly missed by his wife Diane, his daughters Trudy and Cindy, his grandson Damian, his brother Andy and his family, his nephew Andrew and his family and by the many, many wonderful friends he made over the years, most especially Joe (The Rock) Murray of Puerto Rico. But now Girts will join his mother Anna, his father Eduard and especially his beloved granddaughter Larissa in Heaven. Please join us in Celebrating Girts' Life at SMITH'S FUNERAL HOME, 1167 Guelph Line (one stoplight north of QEW), Burlington (905-632-3333) on Friday from 3-5 and 7-9 p.m. and at the service at Compass Point Bible Church, 1500 Kerns Road, Burlington on Saturday, March 20 at 10:30 a.m. Interment Milton Evergreen Cemetery. If you wish to commemorate his life, please make a donation to the Hospital for Sick Children, Division of Cardiology. Girts touched our lives with his gifts of love and caring and sharing and we know that he would want all of us not to mourn his loss of life, but carry on this legacy for him. Our lives were made better knowing him, we will miss him from the bottom of our hearts, life will not be the same without him here to guide us.
