Bill Swaby-Smith

Bill died on February 24, 2008 after battling throat cancer. Email from Norm Kondo to classmates: “I am sorry to be the messenger of bad news. Another one of our Northview buddies has left us. Bill was diagnosed with throat cancer last October and after one round of chemotherapy and radiation, died on Sunday February 24, 2008. He was living in Toronto at the Bain Co-op, where he was a very popular resident and Chair of the Pet Committee (no kidding). He had quite a few cats. Norm Grigg, Dan Linton, Dave Brisley, Paul Coleman and I attended the funeral this afternoon. Bill's 2 daughters, Suzanne and Jennifer were there with his grandkids. His sisters Lynn and Marlene were also there, along with relatives, good friends from the Co-op and York University. His ex-wife Connie had remained friends with Bill. Although, as she said, she couldn't stay married to someone who didn't grow up, she had him over for Christmas for 20 years. We hadn't seen Bill on a regular basis and our annual memorial poker game that we started for our university friend Dave Coleman and then expanded to include Bruce MacMillan, didn't get organized last year. In fact the last one may have been two years ago. Dan and Norm visited Bill last weekend, unfortunately I was out of town so that last time I saw Bill was last November, just before he started his treatment. (By the way, I ran into Bruce MacMillan's widow, Janice, on a flight to Vancouver last week. Bruce's daughter Kristy is making him a grandfather in May.) Bill hadn't changed a lot. He was still good natured, opinionated, but gentle. Not to say he hadn't had his "capers" as older sister Lynn called them. It is so easy to get out of touch and then it is too late. I keep meaning to send out a message but get too busy, you know the routine. So Dan, Norm, Dave, Paul and I will be going out for a ritual beer and this time there will be another empty glass on the table to remind us of our departed friends.”
