Leon Roberts was a big kid, bigger than anyone else I knew in the third grade. He was in my homeroom, and I can't remember the teacher's name. One day, Leon had done something wrong, and the teacher lost her temper. She hit him over the back with a yard stick over and over. When the yard stick broke, she found another one and broke that one too. I can't remember that he did something that awful to be beaten in class in front of all of the rest of us. We were terrified and got out of our desks, to get as far away from the beating as possible. No wonder corporal punishment is no longer allowed! I lived on second street, about three blocks down from where Leon lived. I remember that his was a little house in the middle of a lot covered with weeds and dirt. Leon came out of that to go to school each day. Now as an administrator, Leon would have been on an at-risk list, someone CPS might have tracked. Elaine Kurtz Cockrell

Wow! What a thing to have to experience for Leon and the rest of the class. I hope that at some point in his life he was happy and safe.Blessing on him,
Julia
