For a time in the mid-70's, Greg was a neighbor of mine in Hillcrest. This was when we were in our early teens. Greg played youth baseball, and was one of the first kids I knew to ride a BMX-style bicycle. He was ahead of his time with that idea. He rode that bike all over, and built a primitive wooden ramp and spent a lot of time jumping over things. Trash cans, VW beetles, etc. On one occasion, Greg, myself, Brad Quinton (OHHS '82) and a bunch of other kids had the bright idea of bringing a live shotgun shell into the woods, place it in the fork of a tree, and shoot at the primer with our BB guns. After a few minutes, a lucky shot hit the primer, and the shell fired. The pellets only went about a foot forward, but the small metal crimping that held the primer in the shell flew backwards, went through Greg's t-shirt, and stuck in his belly fat like a cookie cutter. Greg ran off, howling in pain, with all of us in hot pursuit, trying to tackle him before the local paraents got wind of what happened. We tackled Greg to look at his wound, and calm him down so we all wouldn't be grounded for life. After a few minutes, Greg calmed down, and after a look, saw that the wound was minor, and got mad that his t-shirt had a hole in it.
I lost touch with Greg after high school, and heard that he passed away as the result of a tragic accident on a motorcycle that he was a passenger on.
