By chance, many of the people I’d like to see are no longer with us and Tom was one of the best. He had the single next to mine in First Noah and was a consummate banjo picker, warm and thoughtful human being, and had a great sense of irony which, unfortunately, resonated with his life being cut short by a drunk driver right before his marriage. I think of him every day like I do my brother Rick ‘72, a life cut short early but also one of the best.

One politically incorrect memory I have is of the day when an unfortunate coed became manic and entered Noah and began having sex with men she met. we both realized It was an unfortunate situation, no doubt, but Tom ruefully remarked  that it was our luck that she started on the opposite side of the building.

Tom was a kind and gentle soul and an incredible musician.  His loss is a great tragedy.

I also think about Tom Hammond a lot. Not every day-- more like once a week. He was all that Steve and Deborah said, and the first person I really KNEW and loved that died. I couldn't believe it then, and I still can't.

I would like you to know that your comments moved me to tears and I think of you all.

Tom was perfect and like Billy Budd and Christ, this world would not allow him to live.

Never in my life have I heard his touch on the frailing banjo or the finger picking guitar.

His incomparable gentleness brought tenderness into the ordinary moments of life.

Somehow, his death was some sort of epic event caused by the very nature of who he was.

I have missed him immeaurably all my life..the beers and the moments we would have had singing and playing together.

Ellen was in my room that night and her adventurism enhanced my reptuation in the girl's dorms.

So what is that set beside who Tom Hammond was and remains in our hearts and memories.

Thank you all.

Timothy

When my ship sent me to schools in San Diego, I would get in contact with Tom in Carlsbad. We had some good times, sharing beers in a biker bar, going to folk music festivals, painting his apartment, catching up on adventures. Tom was everything people above have mentioned. He was at a great place in his life when it was cut short -- doing well in the educational field and looking forward to his marriage. Thanks, Steve, for your effort to memorialize him.
