Carol Ann Wilkinson Hammitt, formerly of Ruidoso but recently of Paige, Texas, lost her ten year battle with a rare form of cancer early Saturday, June 15, 2013.
Carol’s original prognosis gave her but a six month life expectancy, but fortunately, one of the world’s foremost experts on her rare disease process was on staff at the University of New Mexico, which enabled her to live long beyond that.
Carol was born January 5, 1942 in Amarillo, Texas to W.W. (Watt) and Brooksie Wilkinson and grew up in Odessa, Texas where she graduated from Permian High School (1960). She worked many years in the oilfield business community in Odessa and was an active member of the Desk and Derrick business sorority.
Both parents predeceased her in New Mexico as did her only child, Jana Kay Hammitt. Carol Ann is survived by brothers, Larry Wilkinson of Chicago, George Wilkinson of Ruidoso, and sister, Linda and her husband Russ Vaughn also of Ruidoso. She is also survived by three grandchildren, Justin Slaughter of Santa Fe, Joshua Slaughter of Austin, TX and Brittany Thomas of Alamogordo; nieces, Julie Deyerly and family of Monterey, CA, Kathleen Winebarger and family of Anchorage, AK and Laura Hite and husband, Barry of Chicago, IL. Carol is also survived by former husband, Bob Hammitt and his wife Sandi of Dallas, TX.
Special mention must be given to Carol’s very best friends, Al and Vicki Deland of Paige, Texas, formerly of Odessa, who provided her care in her waning days.
Graveside services will be held at the family plot at the Ruidoso Hondo Valley Memorial Park on Thursday, June 20, 20313 at 11:00 AM.
