Ruth was the oldest daughter and child born to Norma Harris and Dr. Joe T. Boyd. Her parents moved to Odessa in the mid 50's where her dad opened up his chiropractic practice on the corner of 14th and West County Road.
Ruth attended Cameron Elementary, Bowie Junior High School and Odessa High School She dropped out of school before her senior year in the summer of 1964. She married Jack W. Maynard, an Odessa police officer. Her husband was drafted into the Army and was serving in that capacity.
Ruth was working as a checker at Cook's Discount Center in Odessa. Ruth was last seen on January 9, 1971 at the Shadow's Night Club in north Odessa. Her remains were found February 17, 1971 in a pasture in North Ector County. The killer was later identified as Johnny Meadows and he was implicated in the death of five other woman, he was only tried for one murder and he was sentenced to life in prison.
Ruth is buried in an unmarked grave in the Rose Hill Cemetery in Odessa.
I got to know Ruth when I worked at Cook's for a short time while finishing Odessa Commercial College. She was a sweet girl, and I was so sad when my mom told me of her death. She is fondly remembered.
