Ed attended Odessa College on a track scholarship and graduated from Texas Tech University in 1969 with a B.B.A. in Economics. He worked in the commercial insulation industry while completing his degree. Ed married Shirley Darlene Brady in 1967 and had two children. They divorced in 1978, and he married Cynthia Simmons of Amarillo in 1979. Ed worked in the insurance industry for most of his work life and was a CLU. At the time of his death in 2003, he lived in Houston.
