I first met Curtis in the 8th grade at Bowie Junior High School as a member of the band.  I had attended Crockett and Bonham in the 7th grade.  Curtis parents lived just north of San Jacinto Elementary.  His father was a well known barber in Odessa.  After high school, Curtis went to barber school and then was drafted into the Army about the time he had started to work at his father's shop in the Town and Country Shopping Center on North Grandview and at the time 27th Street (now University).  Curtis scored very high on the Armed Forces Qualification's Test and was selected to attend Officer Candidate School after basic training.  Curtis attended Infantry OCS at Fort Benning, Georgia and then was commissioned a 2 LT.  He was sent to Vietnam where he served as a Platoon Leader.  He was awarded a Bronze Star for Bravery and also received a Purple Heart for non threatening wounds he had received.  He returned stateside and was promoted to 1st Lieutenant.  He was separated from the Army in 1969 and returned home and became a hair stylist with his father and then he moved to Denver, Colorado.

Curtis died from injuries suffered in a freak accident on July 29, 1989.  Curtis was at lunch in a hotel in Denver and the resturant was on the 2nd floor.  He was coming down the stairs, when he slipped and fell down the flight of stairs.  He suffered a severe concussion and expired later that evening.

His father called me and ask if I would be a pall bearer at his funeral and I accepted.  He didn't know of many of Curtis' friends who still lived in Odessa.  Curtis was laid to rest at Sunset Memorial Garden's Cemetery in Odessa.
