Linda Vaughn (Barker)

Linda Vaughn (Barker)

Linda Ruth Vaughn Barker, loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend; peacefully passed away on April 17, 2007. She was surrounded by her family following a courageous battle with cancer.

She was born on Dec. 29, 1940, the oldest of 10 children. She married her longtime sweetheart, Sherman L. Barker on Sept. 18, 1959 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. She was the mother of 8 children and grandmother to 35.

Linda loved serving others. She had many callings in the LDS church; working in Primary, Sunday School, Young Women's Presidency and Relief Society President. She served with her husband as an ordinance worker in the Ogden Temple for 6 years. She was a candy striper with one of the first groups at the Dee Hospital in 1958 and was a member of the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers for 45 years. She loved gardening and reading and being with her family. Linda had a wonderful sense of humor and quickly made friends by scattering seeds of sunshine everywhere she went.

The first time I met Linda was in the seventh grade, and she was barefoot in the gym at Wahlquist Jr. High. She was practicing for some type of tumbling routine for a Phys-Ed program. I thought, "Wow! that's the most flexible girl I had ever seen!" I got to know Linda and Sherm better in high school. I think they were together since the seventh grade. Later, when I got married, Karla and I became good friends with her mom and dad. Her dad, Gus, was still running 3-4 miles every night around Hooper when he was in his eighties! They had a small swimming pool behind their home, with the coldest water in Hooper. Sometimes we would visit with Linda, her Mom and Dad, and whatever relative kids or neighbors happened to be at the "pool". Linda was such a kind person. She and her family were among the friendliest, kindest people I knew.

What a shock to read that Linda was gone (for a short time anyway) We were great friends. I remember even in the 10th grade anytime there was a nomination for gueen this... or secretary that... Sherm would shyly raise his hand and say ... Linda Vaughn. I will so miss seeing her at the reunion.
