South Weber- Sterling Eugene Gardner, 71, a loving husband and father, passed away peacefully on November 16, 2006. He was born August 16, 1935 in Spanish Fork, Utah to Eugene Gardner and Blanche Williams. He married Annette Ray, daughter of Raymond and Mattie Green Ray, in the Salt Lake Temple on June 10, 1960. Sterling and Annette were blessed with four children during their 46 years of marriage.
He graduated from BYU with a degree in political science and went on to receive his Master's Degree from the University of Utah and his school administrative certificate from Utah State. He was a lifetime educator, serving in the Ogden City Schools. He taught at Mt. Ogden, Ogden High, Ben Lomond High and was an Assistant Principal at Central Middle School.
Sterling was Justice Court Judge for South Weber City for the past 35 years and for the last 29 years for the Town of Uintah. He performed many marriages and provided counsel and advice to young people regarding their duties and responsibilities. He served a term as President of the Utah Justice Court Judge's Association and also received an award for distinguished service from that association. Sterling served in the Utah Army Reserve for 25 years, reaching the rank of Major. He was a proud member of the Weber County Sons of the Pioneers.
Sterling was active in the LDS church and served a mission in the U.S. Central States Mission. He also served as Bishop in the South Weber 1st Ward, temple ordinance worker, High Priest group leader, stake and ward leader of the young men's program and recently assisted with the Elijah genealogy project for the South Weber Stake Prior to this passing. Sterling and Annette were currently serving a service mission in the family history center at the Joseph Smith Building in the Salt Lake City. For the past years Sterling was obsessed with genealogy research and loved spending time in front of the computer.
Sterling was a true historian and an avid reader of books; he especially loved Louis L'Amour novels. He enjoyed spending his weekends in the summer boating at Echo Reservoir. In the winter, he loved to go snowmobiling with his sons. Two of his most memorable experiences were recent trips he took with all of his grandchildren to Disneyland.
He is survived by his wife, Annette, three children, Daren (Andrea) Gardner, Dirk (Kari) Gardner, and Alyson Gardner LeBow, and eleven grandchildren Amanda, Alexandrea, Sidney, Sadie, Keely, Tanner, Dallin, Abbie, Mikayla, Avery and Conner. He is also survived by his brother, Keith (Hazel) Gardner, and three sisters, Blache (Ralph) Larsen, Kathleen (Ted) Curtis, and Marene (Roger) Redmond.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Eugene and Blanche, his brother Mark and his son Drew.
Viewing services will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday, November 20, 2006 at Leavitt's Mortuary at 836 36th Street in Ogden and from 10:30 to 11:45 a.m. on Tuesday, November 21, 2006 at the South Weber 1st Ward prior to funeral service. The funeral service will be held at the South Weber 1st Ward building at 1401 East South Weber Drive, South Weber at noon.
Interment at Leavitt's Aultorest Memorial Park.
