John W. Morgan

Vietnam War Veteran, MSgt John W. Morgan, age 81, of Olney, Illinois, passed away peacefully with his family by his side on Monday, August 18, 2025, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Vincennes, Indiana. John was born on November 10, 1943, in Olney, Illinois, to the late Willis and Hazel (Holtz) Morgan. He joined the United States Air Force on March 27, 1962. On April 15, 1966, he married the love of his life, Janice Arlene Michels, at First United Methodist Church in Olney, Illinois.

The Funeral Service for John will be held on Tuesday, August 26, 2025 at 11:00 a.m. at the Meyer Funeral Home in Olney, Illinois. Pastor Todd Bettis will be officiating. A visitation for family and friends will take place prior to the service from 9:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. The burial will follow at Haven Hill Cemetery inOlney, Illinois, with full military rites.

His parents owned the Olney Harley Davidson, where he discovered his love for riding and racing motorcycles at an early age.

John retired from the United States Air Force as a Master Sergeant, serving as an Aircraft Superintendent and Assistant Base Chief of Maintenance. He proudly served his country faithfully and honorably for 20 years until his retirement on April 1, 1982. While active-duty, he received two commendation medals for his outstanding meritorious service. During his military career, he completed two overseas deployments to Asia; the first in Thailand during the Vietnam War, and the second in Okinawa, Japan. Following his military retirement, he continued to stay active in the workforce by holding several different positions within the community. Throughout his retirement years, John took great pride in keeping his yard immaculate, and he could often be found enjoying coffee and visiting with friends at the local coffee shop. Above all, he cherished time spent with his family, and he loved traveling with them to various places throughout the years. He enjoyed watching football and NASCAR races on television. John attended church with family, and he was a member of First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). He was a devoted husband and father, and was loved and respected by all who knew him for his commitment to his family as well as his country.

John is survived by his beloved wife of 59 years, Arlene Morgan of Olney, Illinois; his daughter, Andrea (Jason) Strange of Olney, Illinois; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Willis and Hazel Morgan; his daughter, Kimberly Michelle Morgan; his brother, Don (Claudia) Morgan; and his sisters, Alberta (Ivan) Poe, Charlotte (Howard) Simmons, and Norma Grove.

In lieu of flowers, the family encourages memorials be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
