Shirley Cath Murray (Patterson) - Class Of 1952

Shirley Cath Murray (Patterson)

Shirley (Murray) Patterson, age 91, passed away peacefully on August 26, 2025, in Kemah, Texas. Born on May 20, 1934, in Olney, Illinois, she lived a long and meaningful life with deep faith, a loving family, and many friends.

Shirley was the daughter of R. Britton Murray and Catherine Murray. She grew up in Olney where she graduated from high school, preparing her for a life rooted in strong moral values and loyal relationships.

Throughout her life, Shirley was blessed with a large and loving family. She was the devoted mother of Rob Scherer (wife: Candy) and Susan Hutchison (husband: Jack). Her legacy continues through her grandchildren: Cole Scherer; Lauren Hutchison; Daniel Hutchison; Jarred Clark; Jody Thomas; Michael Patterson; Shelly Patterson; and Alex Patterson. She held a special place in her heart for her nieces Kathy Thon, Karen Mordia, Becky Loomis, Stephanie Wonsey, and Debi Phillips, her nephew Randy Copeland, as well as many other extended family members.

Shirley was preceded in death by three beloved husbands—Sam Patterson, Bill Hainline, and Jim Scherer—each of whom shared chapters of her journey. She also mourned the loss of her siblings Mike Murray, Don Murray, and Nancy Copeland.

A woman of deep spiritual conviction, Shirley was a faithful follower of Jesus and an active member of Clear Lake Presbyterian Church. Her commitment to her faith extended into leadership as a Presbyterian Deacon, Elder, and choir director at Mount Zion Presbyterian Church. Her spiritual strength was evident to all who knew her.

Shirley’s warmth extended beyond her family and church community. Known for being kind, generous, caring, and loving, she touched many lives with her gentle spirit. She will be missed by many friends.  A talented quilter, she poured love into every stitch of fabric she worked with—creating pieces that will be treasured for generations. She was a dog lover and found much joy in their companionship throughout the years.

A graveside memorial will be held at Haven Hill Cemetery where Shirley will be buried by her mother and father. Shirley’s memory will bring comfort to those who knew her and continue to inspire acts of kindness in the world she leaves behind.
