Former TU Football Team Physician Dies
Dr. Robert B. Witcher 70, Tulsa, Oklahoma surgeon and former University of Tulsa football team physician, died Thursday, April 2, 1970 in a hospital here following surgery. Dr. Witcher was born in Olney, Illinois October 3, 1899 a son of County Judge, Robert B. and Bertha B. (Kitchell) Witcher.
A graduate of Northwestern University Medical School, Dr. Witcher was widely known here as a specialist in Industrial Medicine and surgery. Dr. Witcher interned at King’s County Hospital, Brooklyn until 1927 when he came to Tulsa and entered practice with his brother, the late Dr. E.K. Witcher. He maintained offices in the Medical Arts Building until it was closed down several years ago. He since had offices in the Court Arcade Building.
An avid sports fan and fisherman, Dr. Witcher was a staunch supporter of the TU football team, serving as team physician from 1941-1951 a relative said. He was a member of the staff of Hillcrest Medical Center.
Survivors are his widow, Doris Jane (Homer) Witcher; a daughter, Mrs. John S. Athens; two sisters, Mrs. Joseph C. Gordon and Mrs. Kenneth R. Elliott both of Dallas and three grandchildren.
Memorial service held at Trinity Episcopal Church with Fitzgerald’s Funeral Service in charge.
