Age 86

Lorraine M. Giles of Omaha, NE, died on August 16th, 2014.  The daughter of Frank and Mary Swanson, she was born in Omaha, NE in October of 1927.

Lorraine graduated from South High School (where she is a member of the school's hall of fame) and went on to earn both a Bachelors and Masters degree from the University of Omaha. In 1948, Lorraine began her 44-year career as an educator with the Omaha Public Schools, teaching 4th grade at Walnut Hill.   In 1952, at age 24, she became the youngest school principal at OPS.  During her 40 years as a principal she worked at 14 different schools including 10 years at Corrigan and 15 years at Gilder/Giles.  She retired in 1992.

Committed to serving the community, Lorraine was also actively involved in the Omaha Safety Council (past Board Chair and Hall of Fame member), the National Safety Council (Board of Directors), the Omaha Education Association (received the School Bell Award), the National Education Association & AARP (lobbying on behalf of teachers and seniors), Dundee Presbyterian Church (member for 50 years and church Elder) and Rotary.

Lorraine was preceded in death by Owen A. Giles, her husband of 42 years, and her brother Robert Swanson. Lorraine is survived by her brother Dale Swanson of Omaha; daughters, Janet (Edward) Huszcza and Carol (Richard) Neslund both of Denver, CO; her grandchildren, Christina and Kathryn Huszcza, Jennifer (Jim) Bernhardt and Derek (Morgan) Neslund; and her great-grandchildren Tyler and Dylan Bernhardt and Barrett Neslund.

A MEMORIAL SERVICE will be held at Dundee Presbyterian Church, 5312 Underwood Ave, Omaha, NE, on Saturday, September 6th at 10:30am.  The family will be greeting friends and relatives immediately following the service. In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial donations be made to the 2014 Denver Walk to End Alzheimer's (www.alz.org) -- either to the Pinehurst Penguins team or to "In Memory of Lorraine Giles" (search on last name Giles).
