Juanita Marguerite Asue, born March 3, 1930, and passed away peacefully on the 25th of January at her home in Kapolei, Hawaii. Juanita or Juani as she was known by loved ones, was born and raised on the island of Maui, Hawaii; the second youngest child of Manuel and Juanita (Montalvo) Asue of Wailuku, Maui. Upon graduating from high school, Juanita attended Greenly College in Colorado before transferring to Drake University and graduating with a bachelor's degree in education. Moving to Omaha in 1958, Juani began a career in special education teaching at Technical High School before settling in at South High School, where she remained until retiring in 1991. Known affectionately as "Miss Sue," a shorten version of her last name, Juani loved teaching and was very enthusiastic and passionate about ensuring her students were well equipped with the skills and experiences needed to succeed in life.
Juani was a longtime Husker fan and season ticket-holder supporting her team rain or shine, often enduring freezing temperatures and uncomfortable seats for the love of her team. Go Big Red! Juani's other passions included traveling, baking/cooking, gardening and sewing/quilting and excelled at all.
Juani is survived by her sister, Anita (Abe) Tanaka of Aiea, Hawaii; her brother, Wayne (Leora) Asue of Maui, Hawaii; nephew, Max (Margie); and nieces, Kathy (Kraig) Genovia of Aiea, Hawaii and Tracey (Tim) Anderson of St. Louis, MO; as well as many grandnephews, a grandniece and several lifelong friends.
There will be a private service on Oahu at a later date.
