Robert “Babe” Penney, a former sports standout at Omaha North and Midland University and athletic director at Omaha Benson for 18 years, died Thursday.  He was 84.

Penney was a January 1949 graduate of North.  An All-Intercity League fullback on the Vikings’ 7-0-1 football team in 1948, his final high school game was an upset of Omaha Creighton Prep in basketball.  At Midland, he was a nominee for the World-Herald state college athlete of the year award as a senior.

He began his educational career as a teacher and coach for three years at Scribner, followed by five at Leigh and four at North.  Penney was Benson’s athletic director from 1967 to 1985 and retired from there as an assistant principal in 1990.  He received outstanding service awards from the Nebraska School Activities Association and the state athletic directors association.
