Jacqueline A. Pospisil was a lifelong Omahan whose roots were deep in Benson, Jackie died peacefully in hospice at Brookestone Meadows while surrounded by her family. She most recently resided in the Rolling Hills Ranch retirement community.

Survived by son and daughter-in-law, Stu and Sherry Pospisil; son and son-in-law, Steve Pospisil and Brian Gilligan; and twin grandsons, Adam and Kyle Pospisil, all of Omaha; and beloved pet Pumpkin. Jackie married Paul Pospisil on June 27, 1959. They celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary in 2009, with Paul passing away in April 2010.

Jackie was the only child of the late Al and Edith Snyder. She attended Benson West Elementary, and graduated from Benson High School in 1952. At Omaha U., where she was a Sigma Kappa, Jackie completed her Bachelor's Degree in 1956. She taught Kindergarten at Kellom and Franklin in OPS until 1961, when she left Education to start her family. She returned as a Kindergarten teacher at Belvedere for one year before joining the OPS central office a Community Counselor/Student Personnel Assistant for the next 21 years, before retirement in 1996. In that time she earned two more degrees from UNO.

Those wonderful friends who became family over the years included the Coxes, Mortons, Quists, Roods, Grigers, Butterfields, Crooms, Schumachers, Cipollas, Quinlivans, Johnsons. Jackie enjoyed decorating for all Holidays. Tops was Halloween. She had a quarter-century tradition of weekend-long open houses. She enjoyed reading mysteries, compiliing photo albums and scrapbooks, and, most of all, spending time with her grandsons. Jackie was baptized and confirmed at Immanuel Lutheran Church. She was a 38-year active member of St. Paul United Methodist Church. She was inducted into the Benson High Hall of Fame in 1992, and was a PTA honorary life member.

Her family is thankful for the the prayers, concern and thoughtfulness shown to Jackie, especially in the past several months. The medical teams at Methodist, Nebraska Medicine and Brookestone Meadows, and the VNA displayed extraordinary compassion and care for her in their efforts to treat her pulmonary hypertension and subsequent hospice care. It will not be forgotten and it keep an eternal smile on Jackie's face.

CELEBRATION of LIFE SERVICE at 11am Wednesday at St. Paul United Methodist Church, 5410 Corby St. in Benson.

Interment: Forest Lawn Memorial Park following luncheon. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to Benson High School Alumni Association, 5120 Maple St.; or to St. Paul Methodist Church.

Longtime OPS worker Jackie Pospisil had big love for Halloween

Jacqueline “Jackie” Pospisil enjoyed decorating her home for all of the holidays, but preparing for Halloween was a real treat for the former kindergarten teacher, a son said Tuesday.

“She loved her Halloween, and every year she had an open house. And that tradition went on for well over 25 years,” said Stu Pospisil of Omaha, a World-Herald staff writer. “She decorated the entire house inside and out. Mom had a Halloween tree that stayed up all year around.”

Jackie Pospisil, 83, died surrounded by family Saturday in hospice care at Brookestone Meadows. A funeral service for the lifelong Omahan will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at St. Paul United Methodist Church, 5410 Corby St. She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul, in 2010.

Pospisil, the only child of Al and Edith Snyder, grew up in Benson, attending Benson West Elementary and graduating from Benson High School in 1952. She received her bachelor’s degree in 1956 from Omaha University, where she was a member of Sigma Kappa sorority.

After graduation, she started a long career with the Omaha Public Schools by teaching kindergarten at Kellom and Franklin Elementary Schools. She married in 1959 and left teaching two years later to start a family.

When sons Stu and Steve were old enough, she returned to OPS as a kindergarten teacher for one year at Belvedere Elementary. She spent the next 21 years in the school district’s central office working as student personnel assistant while earning two advanced degrees from the University of Nebraska at Omaha. She was inducted into the Benson High Hall of Fame in 1992

As a 38-year active member of St. Paul United Methodist Church, Pospisil chaired many committees and served on Nebraska Synod committees. She enjoyed reading mysteries, compiling photo albums and organizing dinner groups that included the Benson Class of 1952, the Silver Sigmas and a sewing group she belonged to for 35 years.

“Even with all of her education accomplishments and volunteering with the church or community groups, mom was most proud of being a grandma,” Stu Pospisil said. “That kind of completed her life.”
