Danny H. Zanders

Danny Harold Zanders, age 89, of Omaha, formerly of Malvern IA, Entered into Rest on April 21, 2018 at his home in Omaha. Danny was born on August 8, 1928 in Malvern, to Frank Leroy and Lillian Lucille (Dunn) Zanders. He was raised in Malvern and graduated from Malvern High School.

Danny was drafted out of High School by the New York Yankees Baseball Club, and played for the Fond du Lac Wisconsin Panthers in the Yankee farm system. His playing time was interrupted when he was drafted into the Korean War.

Upon his return, he married Genelle Marie Stevens on May 31, 1953.

He then went on to earn his Teaching Degree from Wayne State College, earning a double major in Biology and Industrial Arts, and a Master's Degree in Education From The University of Nebraska Omaha. He earned the Nebraska Science Teacher of the Year in 1970.

Danny and Genelle had two sons, Kent and Kurt. They moved from Malvern to Omaha in 1992 where Danny taught Biology and Earth Science at Omaha South High School, continuing a 33-year career in education. He was a lifetime member of the Nebraska Education Association.

He remained a member of the Malvern United Methodist Church. Danny was a talented woodcarver and many of his carvings were of waterfowl, geese, ducks and pheasants, displaying his love of nature and animals. He loved his teaching career and even years after retirement former students would recognize him around Omaha and compliment him on his teaching abilities. He was a devoted family man, friend and educator and will be deeply missed.

Preceding Danny in passing were his parents; and brothers, Doug Zanders and Donner Zanders. Survivors include his loving wife of 64 years, Genelle Zanders; sons, Kent (Jean) Zanders, and Kurt Zanders; grandsons, James and Joseph, all of Omaha; sister, Dixie (Raburn) Benton of Malvern; brother, Dee (Joan) Zanders of Shenandoah, IA; many nieces, nephews, extended relatives and many friends.

Services were held on Thursday, April 26.

Interment was in Malvern Cemetery, Malvern, IA.
