Mary Pitterman (Barnhart)

December 31, 1929- August 1, 2023

Mary Barnhart, 93, passed away August 1, 2023, due to complications from COPD.

Mary Pitterman was born in Cleveland, Ohio on December 31, 1929. She grew up during the Great Depression and later graduated high school in Cleveland, OH. Following in her brothers’ footsteps, she moved to Nebraska and attended the University of Nebraska at Lincoln, where she was an active member of Gamma Phi Beta. While attending the University, she met her future husband, Jack Barnhart. Following graduation, they moved to Omaha and married. Mary taught first grade at Lothrup Elementary School and Jack continued in the family business at Barnhart Press.

Mary was highly involved in the Omaha Community. As a lifetime member of the Salvation Army, she devoted many hours volunteering and fundraising for the organization. She was also active with the Nebraska Medical Center, the UNMC Whistle Stop Store, and she supported Lauritzen Gardens and many other local organizations. She is remembered by her grandchildren for her many colorful stories and her infectious laughter. She had many hobbies including: sewing, reading, cooking, and school involvement, and was known as a devoted friend to many.

Mary was preceded in death by husband, John C. “Jack” Barnhart; brother, Richard Heiny; and brother and sister-in-law, Richard, and Elise Barnhart. She is survived by sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Janet, and Richard Caulk; sons, John Barnhart, and William Barnhart; daughters-in-law, Danna Barnhart, and Christ Barnhart; grandchildren, Dane Barnhart, Alexa Wilson (Jack), Drew Barnhart, Chandler Barnhart, Nicole Golyar (Nicholas), and Chiara Torres (Daniel); great-grandchildren, Ruby Golyar, Iris Golyar, Cashel Golyar, Xander Torres, Zane Torres, IsrealTorres, and Adora Torres; her BELOVED dog, Cricket.

A Visitation will be held on Monday, August 14,2023, from 5pm-7pm at the West Center Chapel. The Funeral Service will be held on Tuesday, August 15,2023, 11am, at All Saints Episcopal Church, 9302 Blondo St. Interment: Forest Lawn Cemetery.

Memorials in Mary’s name have been established at the Salvation Army of Omaha, 10755 Burt St., Omaha, NE 68114, and Lauritzen Gardens, 100 Bancroft St., Omaha, NE 68108.
