https://journalstar.com/lifestyles/announcements/obituaries/winther-ronald-ron/article_fd82291f-e993-5887-a51a-5a16ed3bb135.html        Ron: did many things but he was happiest when he was doing physics.   He spent many years over in Ames Iowa working in a "Think Tank" for physics, which he loved.  I would run into him from time to time.  He was always happy with his life and always asked how everyone was doing and had I seen any of the people from High School.   He got his masters in Physics and moved to Lincoln to teach at UNL.  It was my understanding that he would also ride motor cycles from time to time.  So much for the nice quiet tame mathematician that we all new.  I got to know Ron better in College.  Ron,  Dan Stratman and Dave Chambers all lived on 8th floor Schramm dormitory for two years, so we got to see the human natures of all that did not show in High School.  In our many discussions, mathematics did not come up often.   The one thing that did come up at the reunion well talking with Dave was the time that broke Ron's neck by accident.  Ron decided he wanted to wrestle with us which was not like Ron.  But he came at me with a head but to the gut and I did an inverted lift of Ron when I heard a pop.  I set him down and asked if he was OK.  He said things were tingling.  We immobilized him and took him to the health center where he sat for a couple days.  He did not want to tell his parents. When they found out he immediately  went to Lincoln General for surgery.   Ron  never talked about this again and as far as I know never wrestled again.  But I will always remember his love of life and the friends around him.   He will be missed       Tim Place

Thanks so much for posting the obit and your saga with Ron Winther, John Place!  Wow; he really looked different than his high school portrait!  Of everyone I saw at the reunion I give the "Awards for Looking Mostly Like Themselves" to 1st - Joe Tourek  2nd - Marty O'Neill  3rd - Dave Mahoney!

I don't have any specific or exciting stories about Ron, but my memory of him was of an extremely intelligent young man, and a all-around good and humble guy.  In going to the 50th reunion and reading comments and obits here, I see what leadership and accomplishment came from our Class of 1969.

Thanks again John; my sincere condolences to the family and closest friends of our dear brother, Ron Winther.

P.S. I lived in Schramm our freshman year of 1969-70, but don't recall which floor.  I then moved to Abel Hall (which was recently imploded) where Phil Anstine became my roommate.  I would love to see Phil again, and even got an e-mail that he joined here.  But when I opened this site, he is no where to be found.  His high school photo was put here, and maybe that triggered the false alarm?
