Edward F. 'Ted' Hanifin, 73, of Upper Lenox Ave., Oneida, passed away on Monday, January 15, 2024, at Oneida Health Hospital following a short illness. He was born on October 21, 1950, in Oneida, the son of Eugene Bart and Mureta 'Rita' (Hatzinger) Hanifin. Ted was a 1969 graduate of Oneida High School. On February 12, 1972, Ted was united in marriage to Ann 'Barnesie' Maher in St. Patrick's Church. Ted was the owner and operator of Hanifin Tire and Service Center on Genesee St. in Oneida for over twenty five years. He retired in 1999. He then went on to drive school bus for the Oneida City School District for twenty years. Ted was a member of Spirit of Hope Parish, attending St. Joseph's Church in Oneida. He was an honorary life member of the E. Bart Hanifin Council 473 Knights of Columbus. Ted was the longtime organizer of the Knights Clam Bake with his dad, Bart. Ted served as the Oneida Second Ward Councilor from January 1, 2000 to December 31, 2007. During his four terms as councilor, he served as Deputy Mayor from 2002 to 2005. Ted was an avid hunter and fisherman, enjoying his weekends at his camp in Empeyville with family and friends. Ted was a friend to all. His infectious laugh and his incredible storytelling ability were legendary. But above all, Ted always put his family first. His 14 grandchildren were the light of his life. He took every opportunity to visit his kids, kept in touch over text and called them regularly, and he was a staple on the sidelines of his grandchildren's sporting events. Surviving besides his loving wife of fifty-one years, Barnesie; are four children, Lisa (Thomas) Gaudet, of Durhamville, Chad (Katie) Hanifin, of Oneida, Megan (Daniel) Finley, of Pepperell, MA, and Craig Hanifin of Baldwinsville45rew; fourteen grandchildren, Madeline, Grady, Sammy, Sage, Indie, Sylvie, Teddy, Patrick, Rowan, Liam, Carter, Westyn, Paisley, and Tate; a sister, Kathleen (Rodney) Kent; a brother, Kevin B. Hanifin; and many nieces and nephews. Ted was predeceased by a sister, Mary H. Anderson on January 22, 1989. Mass of the Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, January 20, 2024, at 10:00 AM at St. Joseph's Church, 121 St. Joseph's Place, Oneida where the Rev. Christopher J. Ballard and Rev. Michael Carmola will co-officiate. Interment will take place in St. Patrick's Cemetery. Family and friends are invited and may call on Friday from 3:00 PM to 7:00 PM at the Ironside Funeral Home, Inc., 342 Main St., Oneida.
