(Obituary 2)

Edward P. Bachmeyer, Jr., 71, a junior-high geography and English teacher who traveled the world and chose second jobs that allowed him to serve the public, died Friday at the Manor at Perrysburg.

He had cancer, niece Kimberly Bachmeyer said.

Mr. Bachmeyer of Perrysburg retired in 1999 from Mason Junior High School in Erie, Mich., where he taught for 31 years. Classes he taught included creative writing.

"For the longest time, he would take his class to New York, and they would see a play," his niece said.

He was a theater fan himself. He and a friend visited the Stratford Festival and was an early follower of Phantom of the Opera during its run in Toronto. He also took his niece and nephews to musicals at the Stranahan Theater.

Geography was a favorite subject to teach, and travel was a favorite pastime. Besides visiting more than half the states and Canada, he toured Europe. A highlight several years ago was a two-week tour of Russia.

At Mason Junior High, he was an adviser to student council and the student newspaper and yearbook. He was a building representative for the local affiliate of the Michigan Education Association.

During his career, Mr. Bachmeyer worked at LaSalle's department store, which became Macy's and then Elder-Beerman, at the downtown, Westgate, and finally Woodville Mall location.

After a brief stint at Old West End Collector's Corner, Mr. Bachmeyer worked in visitor services at the Toledo Museum of Art for more than a decade. He helped visitors within the museum but acted almost as a concierge.

"He loved being around people and the culture of the art museum," his niece said.

He was born Aug. 5, 1944, to Mary and Edward Bachmeyer, and lived in East Toledo. The family later moved, and he was a 1962 graduate of Clay High School in Oregon. He received a bachelor of science degree in education from the University of Toledo and continued graduate studies at Eastern Michigan University.

Formerly of Northwood and Rossford, Mr. Bachmeyer frequented estate sales and collected old Electrolux vacuum cleaners and kitchen mixers. He liked to cook and, after his parents died, took charge of the family Thanksgiving, preparing Hungarian dressing, real mashed potatoes and cranberry sauce, and green bean casserole. He remained close to his niece and two nephews and their families.

He was a member of St. Joseph Church on Locust Street in North Toledo and appreciated the traditional Mass offered there in Latin, his niece said.

Surviving is his brother, Paul.

Memorial services will be at 10:30 a.m. today at St. Rose Church, Perrysburg. Arrangements are by the Hoeflinger-Bolander Funeral Home, Oregon. The family suggests tributes to St. Joseph Church, Toledo; the Wood County Humane Society; Basilica and National Shrine of Our Lady of Consolation, Carey, Ohio, and Hospice of Northwest Ohio.
