Philip Scott Haynes, known to family and friends simply as Phil, passed away on Friday, May 29, 2026, leaving behind a lifetime of cherished memories and a legacy defined by love, service, adventure, and devotion to family.
Born on June 23 in Toledo, Ohio, Phil was one of five sons born to Dick and Alice Haynes. Growing up among his brothers helped shape the loyalty, humor, and strength of character that would remain hallmarks of his life.
Phil proudly served his country in the United States Navy before building a successful career as a consultant with Deloitte. Throughout his professional life, he earned the respect of colleagues and clients through his intelligence, dedication, and unwavering integrity.
Phil approached life with enthusiasm and a spirit of adventure. An accomplished race car driver, he competed in open-wheel and Formula 3 racing series throughout the Southeast, embracing both the excitement of competition and the friendships forged through the sport. He was a devoted Carolina Panthers fan and proudly held Personal Seat Licenses from the team’s inaugural season, supporting his beloved Panthers from day one.
When he was not at the racetrack or supporting the Panthers, Phil could often be found outdoors, where he felt most at ease. He had a deep appreciation for skiing, spending time in the mountains, and enjoying the beauty of the natural world. He took particular pleasure in observing the birds that visited his home, especially the hummingbirds he carefully watched and tended to each year. Family and friends knew they could often find Phil keeping a watchful eye on “his” hummingbirds, taking great joy in their return and sharing his admiration for these remarkable visitors. His love of nature reflected his ability to find fulfillment in life’s simple pleasures and to inspire a similar appreciation in those around him.
A proud Navy veteran and patriot, Phil possessed a deep and abiding love for America. He was grateful for the opportunities this country provided and never hesitated to express his appreciation for the freedoms, values, and traditions he held dear. His love of country was evident not only in his words but in the way he lived his life—with pride, integrity, and respect for others.
Above all, Phil was a family man. He is survived by his loving wife, Candace Haynes; his two beloved sons, Sean (Megan) Haynes and Scott (Ora) Haynes; and his cherished granddaughter, Riley Birt, who brought immeasurable joy to his life. He is also survived by his brothers, extended family members, and many dear friends whose lives were enriched by his kindness, humor, and friendship.
Phil will be remembered for his adventurous spirit, his deep love for family, his devotion to country, and his appreciation for the beauty found in everyday moments. Whether behind the wheel of a race car, on a ski slope, cheering on the Panthers, or watching the hummingbirds gather outside his window, Phil embraced life with enthusiasm and gratitude. Though he will be deeply missed, the memories he created and the love he shared will remain in the hearts of all who knew him.
