Dorothy Stratton (Hancey)

Dorothy Stratton Hancey, 50, of Rexburg, Idaho, died July 17, 1995 at her home after a long bout with cancer. She was born November 7, 1944 in Tooele, Utah, a daughter of Warren Isom and Dorothy Mensel Stratton. She attended Orem High School in Utah and earned a bachelor's degree in home economics from Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah. She was admired for her beauty and talents and was crowned Miss Orem and Miss Days of '47 in Salt Lake City. She married Douglas Adamson Hancey Jr, June 4, 1969, in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. They had six children. She was a loving mother and a friend to each child. She was an active member of the Rexburg community and served in several volunteer organizations. Whe re-established the Parent Teacher Association at Madison Junior High School after it had been inactive for ten years and later started the Parent Teacher Student Association at Madison High School. As chairwoman of the Miss Rexburg Upper Valley Scholarship Pageant, she hoped many young women obtain scholarship money for college. She also served as president of the board of directors of the Women's Crisis Center and as an area captain for the American Cancer Society. Her countless hours of community service touched the lives of many area residents. Surviving are her husband of Rexburg; sons and daughters; Christian Hancey of Virginia, Michelle Hancey of Idaho Falls, Richard Hancey of Provo, Utah, Jill Hancey, John Hancey and Kelly-Anne Hancey, all of Rexburg; her mother of Orem; sisters and brother, Judith Mattinson of Tooele, Emily Peacock of Apache Junction, Arizona, and Warren Mensel Stratton of Provo. She was preceded in death by her father and a sister.
