John Harold Rose VIEW PROFILE

John Harold Rose

BMHS Class of '80 and brother of webmaster Chuck Rose...this site is dedicated to his memory.

John was born July 26th, 1962 in Rapid City, South Dakota and died on September 25th, 2002 in Salt Lake City, Utah.

He was survived by Jean Ann Rose (Mother) - Charles W. Rose (Father) - Charles W. Rose, II (Brother) BMHS '79 - James A. Rose (Brother) Judge Memorial HS '82 - Michael A. Rose (Brother) Judge Memorial HS '83...and his nephews nephews Chase, Shad, and Andrew.

John received his undergraduate B.S. from the University of Utah...and was as devoted to his career in Electrical Engineering as he was to the challenge and adventure of the outdoors...where he was regularly found surfing, back country skiing, rock and ice climbing, snowboarding, scuba diving and fishing in both fresh and salt water.

He was an accomplished bagpiper who traveled widely with the Salt Lake Scots...raised Bonsai trees and exotic fish, was a nationally recognized cigar afficianado with an extensive international collection, and another of single malt scotch...and of course a rabid Utah Utes Sports Fan.

John Served With Distinction for six years aboard the USS Pollack (SSN-603) Fast Attack Submarine, and twelve years with NC TAMS Naval Reserve Command, Salt Lake City, and was selected (frocked) as a Chief Petty Officer prior to retiring to inactive reserves.

He was Awarded:

Navy Expeditionary Medal (Multiple Awards), Navy Sea Service Medal (Multiple Awards), Navy Good Conduct (Multiple Awards), Meritorious Unit Citation, Navy Achievement Medal (Multiple Awards), Command Sailor of the Quarter,  Command Sailor of the Year, as well as numerous other citations for superior performance.

John's outdoor Memorial Service was a celebration of his life, overflowing depite being held on a brisk, rainy, fall afternoon...and just prior to the service we were graced with parting clouds, clear skys, still air, and a late afternoon sunset which spread across the snow covered peaks and colorful turning forests of the same Wasatch Mountains that he loved...and where he spent much of his adult life.

His Salt Lake Scots Pipemaster came out of retirement to play his Memorial...opening with "Amazing Grace"...and closing the ceremony with the traditional hymn for fallen Scots, "Flowers in the Forest", as he walked off and the music faded into the pines in the distance.

Afterwards all were invited to share a warm and cozy evening supper of stew and music...where along one wall was colleciton of John's Sports, Navy, High School & College and work and hobby memoriabilia...and along another pictures also celebrating his life and moments shared with friends.  There was a group toast made over dinner with single malt scotch (several actually), and a group of men and women retired outside after dinner to smoke some cigars in his honor as well.

John was later interred with Full Military Honors at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetary, Point Loma, San Diego, California.

They say the measure and wealth of a man is by the wake he leaves behind him as he passes through life...the people he touched...and the lives he changed.  By this standard, John Harold Rose was a great and rich man...for there were those who only met him once, and yet never forgot his youthful enthusiasm and lust for life...even in the face of great adversity.

Fair winds and following seas...
