Damon Jay Gjovig Damon Jay Gjovig, age 47, Overland Park, Kansas, passed away Thursday, May 1, 2008 after many years of poor health. A celebration of Damon's life will be held 1:30 PM Friday, May 9th at D. W. Newcomer's Sons Johnson County Chapel, 11200 Metcalf Avenue, Overland Park, Kansas. Cremation, private inurnment in Johnson County Memorial Gardens, Courtyard of Memories mausoleum. Contributions in Damon's name are suggested to Animal Haven, 9800 West 67th Street, Merriam, Kansas 66203 or to the charity of your choice. Damon graduated from Shawnee Mission South High School in 1979 and attended Johnson County Community College and the University of Kansas. He is survived by his parents, Jon and Lois Gjovig of Overland Park; brother, Derek and his wife Lori, and their four children of Olathe; maternal grandmother, Esther Tolbert of Topeka; step- grandmother, Virginia Gjovig of Jefferson City, Missouri; and many relatives and friends.

Damon was my freshman roomie at college (KU), me, Zimm, Chaplick, and Damon.He was always a great guy and lived in the gym, and I am saddened to hear of the loss.
Lots of nights I fell asleep (not) to him playing Jimmy Hendrix' "Hey Joe"...................
He is missed.

Damon was my next door neighbor and one of my best friends after I moved to Overland Park. He had more talent in more areas than almost anyone I knew. He was a good athlete and very intelligent - something he did not play up around most people. He was my debate partner for a couple of years in high school and could argue like nobody's business. I can even remember him bringing an opponent or two to tears. We did the good cop, bad cop thing. I learned a lot from debating with Damon and its probably one of the reasons I'm a trial lawyer today. We fell out of touch over the last few years and it was very sad to learn of his passing. I attended the funeral last summer and it brought back a lot of fond memories.Jenny Allred (Wright)
When my husband Chuck and I were dating, way back in the day, we met up with Damon, Colin Fitt and two of my good friends from KU in Westport to see Rocky Horror Picture Show. All I really remember from the night was laughing non-stop; almost as much as we did in Mrs. Adams 8th grade science class. I hope, when I'm gone, I leave as happy a memory as Damon left.Robert Rafferty
I knew Damon from grade school, high school, and even the same fraternity in college. Played a LOT of tennis and fished while youngsters. I'll never forget playing poker with him at the age of 7 or 8 for pennies. I won all his pennies and he grabbed them laughing and threw them all over the house running out the door. Among several classes that Damon and I were in at South was Miss Jennings DECA class (1st hour, I believe). He did like talking smack a lot. I enjoyed his quick wit and he and I would spend a good amount of time giving each other crap for, you guessed it, no apparent reason!My "mad cow" keeps me guessing, but I do also remember spending the afternoon with Damon and, I think, Doug Elliot at Pizza Queen(?) at 95th and Antioch. All I can really remember is how Damon was going on and on about the Stones' Beast of Burden song... I don't know; we had fun tho'!
I wish there was a better "grapevine" of info when people pass; I would definitely had been at his funeral and paid my respects had I known.
