ANNOUNCEMENTS

Most of you will not have any idea who I am. There are at least two reasons for that: the class of 1963 was huge and my high school days were far from remarkable. I did participate in the school newspaper -The Mission. I WAS a 1963 graduate. So, before I ask you for something I will give you a little background. I have lived in Shawnee Mission for more than 75 years. After college I spent 31 years in Shawnee Mission as a teacher, sponsor, coach and administrator. I taught at Shawnee Mission North - English and journalism from 1970-1976. I was the sponsor for The Mission during that time and I was SMN's first baseball coach. I also helped with the foreign exchange students, yell leaders, yearbook and drill team. I worked at Hocker Grove, and Shawnee Mission West from 1976 to 1997. I was principal at SM North from 1997 to 2001. From 2001 - 2006 I was principal of Oak Park high school in North Kansas City, MO. Counting my time as a student, I was a part of SMN for 13 years but was around North for 31 years while being a part of the Shawnee Mission School District..
I have dealt with thousands of students of all backgrounds. As a generalization I found that students who participated in activities and sports enjoyed their high school experience more than those who didn't. They also made better grades as a rule. North has change dramatically over the 60 years since I was a student there. it would be fair to say that several SM schools have changed dramatically in the same time period. Look at the demographics/socioeconomics.
It would be simpler for you to read the following website headednorth.org. to understand where I am headed. The website was conceived, sponsored and maintained by former North teachers, administrators, sponsors and coaches for no compensation. Some of you will say that the SM District should be providing for these students that are helped by the headednorth.org website. Maybe so, but it's not happening. Booster clubs are set up in all five SM high schools. I'm sure some of you can guess how unequal that has become. Please read the website headednorth.org and make a decision based on your high school experience as to how much you can help or not.
Thank You for reading this information. John Krueger

There is no longer SMN Indians. School board caved. The new name is SMN Bisons.
