Mark was a graduate of Duke University. There is a scholarship there established by his family in his memory. As I recall, he died from what has since become a very curable form of cancer.
Received the following additional information (edited slightly) about Mark from Jerry Petruzzelli, who knew him better than I did:
Mark had three brothers (no sisters), all of whom were physicians. Mark and John Edwards were my rides to and from South in our junior and senior years where we did debate team, student counsel, and other activities together. His convertible Oldsmobile (a Cutlass?) is still fondly remembered. He graduated from Duke in '74 and then attended Wharton Business School at the University of Pennsylvania, earning an MBA in '76. He returned to Kansas City (Prairie Village) and worked for Arthur Anderson (it may have been Price Waterhouse) for 4 years before succumbing to cancer in the winter of 1981, less than a year after our 10th year reunion. He got the diagnosis shortly after graduating from Wharton. Tom Liolios and I spent time with Mark on several occasions in San Francisco and Silicon Valley when he visited - we would hit Napa and Sonoma. Mark was a budding entrepreneur and managed to buy and even fixed up a string of houses which he rented to others before and while working at Anderson. Mark was the classic doer whose life was cut too short far too early. The family was thereafter beset by other tragedy. His father was killed instantly and his mother spent years recovering her health and memory after enduring numeorus surgeries due to a tragic accident on K-10 when someone smashed head on into their car.

Mark was born to Dr. John and Joan MacFarlane in Indianapolis, Indiana on 7 June 1952.
He had 3 brothers.
He died in early April, 1981 at the age of 29 in Grant, Indiana, near Indianapolis.
