John Wicecarver

Olathe News, June 6, 2006: John L. Wicecarver, III, 54, of Leawood, passed away at his home May 31, 2006. The service will be held at 12:30 p.m., Friday, June 9, 2006, at Leavenworth National Cemetery Chapel, Leavenworth, Kan. Donations may be made to Animal Haven, Merriam, Kan., in John' s name. John was born February 6, 1952, in Little Rock, Ark. He was the son of John and Betty Joan Anderson Wicecarver, who preceded him in death. John was a graduate of Shawnee Mission South High School and a member of the Cross Country team that won the State Championship his Senior year. John graduated from the University of Kansas with a degree in business and joined the U.S. Army after graduation. He was in the Tank Division. John worked as a banker and bank examiner in southern Missouri until moving back to Leawood to be near his family. John had a wonderful sense of humor and an infectious smile. He loved playing jokes on his friends and family and was never without a comeback. He loved animals, music and barbecuing. Underneath his sometimes tough exterior was a kind and tender heart. John is survived by his daughter, Amy Wicecarver-Feldman, Overland Park; four grandchildren; brother, Thomas S. Wicecarver, Kansas City, Mo.; two sisters, Carol Tracy, Scottsdale, Ariz., and Karin Sampson, Gardner.

When I recently joined this site, I was saddened to see that John was in the “In Memory” section.  A few years ago I scanned many hundreds (or thousands) of pictures that my dad took, and I recalled seeing John in one of the photos from October, 1969, when the SMS XC team won the state championship.  John and I, plus other names that I’ve seen recently, ran cross country and track.  A strong camaderie develops when a group runs together the insane number of grueling miles that we ran year around.  I wish that I could or would have kept in touch with him, but I left the KC area in 1977, returning briefly a few years later, and lost contact with everyone I knew.  Anecdotally, I’ll relate my “envy” of John because he had a wonderful, red Pontiac GTO, 4 in the floor, with white interior.  I think that it was a 1968 or 1969 vintage.  As I remember, he was cautious and careful with that car, a trait that I probably would have not displayed if I drove it every day.  Ahhh, to be 17 again.

I remember him from elementary school.  He was always positive, loved to laugh and kind to others.  Rest Well, John.
