Mike Hernon

The years have flown by so quickly and now I find myself a senior citizen. I have had a great life with a wonderful family and a very satisfying profession. My colleagues were all younger and they viewed me as the senior professor on faculty. What a strange feeling that was! Aside from my teaching here at UTM, I played in the Paducah Symphony and the Jackson Symphony in Jackson, Tennesse. Part of my academic research led me to Perugia, Italy where I spent several weeks working with an old 15th century manuscript of Italian music from that period. I retired in June of 2011 because of some serious health issues which required me to resign from both symphonies and cease all professional playing.

I don't really have any amusing stories to tell but I can say I had a great time at Paducah Tilghman, playing in the band and also busy in the school ham radio club..a hobby I thoroughly enjoyed. I am not active in the hobby anymore and donated all of my equipment to the ham radio station at Murray State University , a club that I helped to establish sometime around 1959-1960. As a footnote I would add that, since retirement, I now have time to spoil my daughter and her three children.
