Charles Lieber

Charles Clarence Lieber Jr.OBITUARY

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Charles Clarence Lieber Jr., age 71, on January 30, 2025, following a brief illness. Charles was born on March 9, 1953, in Painesville, Ohio, alongside his twin sister Renee to Charles Clarence Lieber Sr. and Jeannette Ann (Bobel) Lieber.Charles grew up in Painesville, graduated from Harvey High School, and later received an honorable discharge from the United States Air Force. Afterward, he moved to Colorado and then to Georgia, where he earned his master’s degree in history from Georgia State University. Eventually he settled back in Painesville for the remainder of his life.Charles was known for living life on his own terms. He had a passion for reading and history. He could captivate listeners for hours with fascinating stories about the Middle Ages and World War II. His love for movies, especially classic films on TCM, earned him somewhat of a reputation as a movie guru. An avid music lover, Charles enjoyed a wide range of genres, with a particular fondness for rock ‘n’ roll (of course!). He also had a flair for acting, performing in various roles, including the Hookah-Smoking Caterpillar in Alice in Wonderland as a child and later as a prominent cast member in It’s a Wonderful Life with a Sandusky, Ohio repertory company.Charles was a passionate sports fan, supporting the Cleveland Indians, Ohio State football, and in his later years, women’s soccer teams. His lifelong friend, Bill Lyons, had many raucous conversations with him about their mutual love / hate of the Cleveland Browns. Numerous Saturday nights were happily spent at The Painesville Speedway, watching his son, Chuck, stock-car racing. He had a large funny bone that went along with his wide grin and the sparkle in his eye when he laughed. But he was also a man of conviction, deeply committed to causes like the health of the environment, racial injustice, and political corruption, and he was never shy about expressing his views. Most of all, he loved helping people, finding great joy in his work at Office Depot, Signs Now, the 2010 Ohio Census Bureau, many non-profit organizations and as a Skilled Nursing Assistant in several venues. He was particularly fond and proud of his many years of service as a Presiding Judge at various polling stations for the Lake County Board of Elections.Charles is survived by his son, Charles Sadar of Painesville, his grandchildren, Mikki and Tiffany and four great-grandchildren, Peyton, Jeremiah, Amelia and Harper as well as his sisters, Cheryl Haught and Renee Haffey of Painesville, Ohio, and Annette Highland and Melisande Heckman of Westerville, Ohio.He was welcomed into heaven by his parents, his sister Bonita (BJ) Stubbs, and his brother Robert (Rob) Lieber.Family and friends are invited to join in a final farewell at Charles’s gravesite at Riverside Cemetery on March 15, 2025, at 11:30 a.m. A gathering at Steele Mansion, on Rt. 20 in Painesville will take place immediately afterwords. All are welcome.
