ROBERT HUGHES Obituary

Bob Hughes, husband, father, traveler, cyclist, and devoted friend, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Sunday, October 3, 2021 at the age of 65. Bob came into this world, along with his twin brother Randy, on September 3, 1956 in Elgin, Illinois to Raymond and Eileen Hughes of Palatine. Bob grew up in a loving home with ten brothers and sisters, five older and five younger, as the consummate middle child. In adulthood, after several attempts at proposing to her, Bob married his cherished wife Cindy in 1985. They built a life together and had two wonderful and beloved children, Dan (Rachel) and Maggie. Bob was the kind of father who would drop everything to help his children. Whether it was driving 12 hours in a snowstorm so Maggie would be home in time for Christmas, or literally taking the winter boots off his feet and giving them to Dan, Bob was selfless. He would always take something lesser so those who he loved would be safe and happy. Bob was kind, generous, and always willing to help his family, friends and neighbors. When it came to friendships, Bob valued quality over quantity. If you were a friend of his, you knew it. He showed this love through safety texts, rides to the airport, helping friends move, and always providing a helping hand. Bob gave selflessly and worked hard to provide for his family and they all knew how important they were to him. His definition of family was broad, including both those related by blood and those who became family by choice. After 42 years of service, Bob retired from Nicor Gas. In the rare hours he wasn't working, he enjoyed exercising, taking naps, his McDonald's coffee group, the Chicago Bears, and most of all, his family. He'll be remembered for sitting in his garage recliner, his love of the weather channel, his fascination with learning about anything and everything, his eclectic playlists, and the most important things to him, his wife and children. Bob is survived by his wife Cindy (Scheffler), son Dan (Rachel), daughter Maggie, grandsons Gunnar and Abel, and a soon to be born granddaughter. Also surviving are his sister-in-law Paula, siblings Richard, Denise (Stan Vorgias), Russell, Randall (Janet), Deirdre (Tom) Powers, Diane (Joe) Keating, Dorice (Mike Klune), and Rory (Diana), his mother-in-law Joan Scheffler and his many wonderful cousins, nieces, and nephews. Bob was preceded in death by his parents, brother Raymond, his sister Dorothy, and his father-in-law Jim Scheffler. A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
