Obituary of Julie DeWerd Brandstätter

Julie Brandstätter, age 44, of Los Olivos, died Wednesday, April 16th 2003, following a courageous battle with cancer. She was born in Redwood City, California, the youngest of three children.

Her early years were spent in Corrales, New Mexico with her beloved dogs and horses. High school years were in Rancho Mirage, California where she discovered competitive gymnastics. Before completing her degree at San Diego State University, she fell in love with windsurfing in Hawaii and moved there.

She was one of the first competitive female windsurfers in the world. She joined the World Cup Windsurfing Tour and achieved the status of the top female windsurfer in the world. Julie spent the next ten years traversing the globe twice a year while competing in far-away locals including Japan, Australia, South Africa, Indonesia, Holland, France, Italy, Spain, Germany, San Francisco Bay and the Columbia River Gorge. She met her husband Bernhard Brandstätter of Salzburg, Austria, also a World Cup Champion windsurfer on the Tour.

After retiring from competition, the Brandstätters lived in Maui, Sri Lanka, and Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia and then settled in Los Olivos a year-and-a-half ago.

Julie had a gentle and quiet strength, loved to travel and had a “never give up” attitude that carries on in her children. “Where is your sense of adventure?” was her motto. She asked her children that question frequently as they traveled throughout the world. Julie and her family loved the ocean, horses and skiing and snowboarding in Austria with their family.

Julie will be deeply missed by her family and all who knew her. The family would like to express their gratitude to friends and the entire community for their gracious and overwhelming support during Julie’s brave battle. Julie’s family would like to especially thank Dr. Fred Kass, Judy Luciano and all the wonderful and caring nurses of Six Central at Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital. We will never forget all the care and comfort you provided for our sweet Julie.

Julie is survived by her husband Bernhard Brandstätter, her son Bernie Brandstätter, her daughter Sophie Brandstätter, her mother Helen de Werd of Placitas, N.M., her father Ted de Werd of Honolulu, HI, her Grandmother Marguerite de Werd of Sparks, NV, her brothers, Jan de Werd of Eugene, OR and Jourdi de Werd of Los Olivos, her Mother and Father-In-Law, Margaretha and Emmerich Brandstätter of Salzburg, Austria and a large extended family. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Cancer Center of Santa Barbara.

Julie took me to our Sadie Hawkins's Dance I was smitten by her quiet gracefullness ever since. We kept in touch through her days at San Diego State, but she left us all in the dust when she became an international Windsurfing champion!!

We all miss you Julie....

I am shocked to hear of Julie's death. I rode on the bus with Julie in 9th grade in Rancho Mirage. I remember admiring her being the quintessential California girl, with her blonde hair and long, lean and tan body. We carpooled from jr. high for gymnastics so we could practice with the high school. My blessings to her family.
